about

A folk fable about a looming specter of fortune.

lyrics

One night I had a dream
As I was coasting over
The summit of Morris Hill,
I saw a specter floating over
J.R. Simplot's memorial tomb,
Lingering like a dormant cocoon,
He was glowing white as the moon,
And grinning like some sort of goon

With his dastardly claws outstretched,
Looking like they had been through some filing,
Drawing me closer to him
As I thought to ask why he was smiling
But I didn't even need to speak,
He floated right down to me
And he told me exactly why
As some green fire lit up his eyes

He said, "All over this city,
"You'll see the claims of my fame
"You'll see where my gold lies
"And you will never forget my name
"I am the reason that these streets sparkle,
"You should keep that in mind,
"And when you see that gold, don't dare touch it
"It's all mine, it's all mine"

He said, "I hold this whole damn state
"In the palm of my iron fist and
"You can dream of opportunity all you want, b
"But if I were you, I would never risk it
"I made damn sure my income was highest,
"I made damn near everyone my servant
"I learned that if you question greed, even for a second,
"You don't deserve it, you don't deserve it"

"You can bet I worked hard for the money,
"I strived and I chose well
"I sacrificed and I bled for the money,
"I followed it all the way to hell,
"I made it all for my family
"And now they have more than you
"And when you see that gold, think of them,
"And pay your respect where all respect is due"

"Yes, my blood runs the thickest,
"The most glorious line of all,
"My children are the richest,
"And you are the doormat where there feet fall
"They are the reason for the ground that you stand on,
"How this city began and how it will end,
"And when you see that gold, don't dare touch it
"It's all for them, it's all for them."

(bridge)
I woke up the next morning and I took myself to work
With that ghost stuck to the back of my mind where all of my memories lurk
I thought of working hard for money and how much anyone really needs,
And all of the people who have given Simplot flowers, telling that fucker to rest in peace

One day, I had a dream
That I was riding a big bulldozer
And I drove it right into his tomb,
I knocked that marble tower right over
Why don't we start again?
Why don't we start again?

(Amen)
